其实故宫里的大缸分为三类，铁的、铜的和鎏金的，一般来说，明朝时一般用铁做的大缸，清朝时开始用铜质和鎏金的。这么多的铜大缸，摆放的位置可是很有讲究的。比如清朝时，鎏金的铜缸那是等级最高的，只摆放在最重要的大殿门口，比如太和殿、保和殿、乾清门前，共有18口。而其他宫门口一般只放置铁缸和铜缸。大铜缸雕塑在材质上多选用优质青铜而铸，以鎏金铜缸等级最高，也最显豪华高贵，而一些后宫及长街，则摆设一些小铜缸或铁缸。

Large copper cylinder sculptures are mostly made of high quality bronze, with the highest grade of gold cylinder and the most luxurious and noble. Some rear palaces and long streets are equipped with small copper cylinders or iron cylinders.
